We thought it might be useful to share some of the health benefits of a number of the main ingredients and spices we commonly use in our great tasting Indian meals.
Onions: We love onions, and you will find them as a base to so many of our dishes! Onions contain natural sugar, and vitamin A, B6, C and E. You will also find minerals such as sodium, potassium, iron, dietary fibre and folic acid in onions.
Garlic: We eat a lot of garlic! Probably too much in fact, but why stop when it tasty and does so much good! Garlic helps to reduce heart disease, it lowers cholestrol without affecting beneficial HDL cholestrol. It can also help towards lowering blood pressure. Garlic has also been shown to reduce pain and other symptoms in people with arthritis.
Ginger: Ginger is good for digestion, and it helps to clear the sinuses during seasonal flare ups. Ginger can help with air sickness or nausea, and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Cumin: You will find cumin in many of our dishes. Cumin helps with digestion, and is said to protect against memory loss. It Iis a very powerful antioxidant and is known to possess anti-asthmatic properties.
Cloves: Cloves are high in vitamins, minerals, and fibre. The component responsible for cloves powerful effects and odor is a substance called Eugenol. Eugenol is fights against harmful organisms, including fungus that may cause discomfort.
Cinnamon: Cinnamon may help in the management of type 2 Diabetes. It can help to reduce blood pressure and insulin resistance. It has anti fungal, antibacterial, and even anti viral properties. It can also help neurons and improve motor function in those suffering from Alzheimer's or Parkinson's.
Green Cardamoms: Cardamoms can help with digestive problems; indigestion, heartburn, intestinal spasms, IBS, intestinal gas, constipation, liver and gallbladder complaints and loss of appetite. Cardamoms can also help relieve the symptoms of the common cold such as cough, bronchitis, sore throat and sore mouth.
Black Cardamoms: These can help regulate gastro-intestinal health. Helping to regulate stomach acid, heartburn and stomach cramps. They also help to control cardiac rhythm which in turn helps to control blood pressure. Helps relieve the symptoms of the common cold, tooth and gum infection. Cardamoms can also help in the treatment of breast, colon, prostrate and overian cancers.
Black pepper corns: Black pepper corns help to improve digestion ,help with heartburn and also help in the prevention of intestinal gas. They also have anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant properties. Pepper corns can also help with weight management.
Fenugreek: Fenugreek seeds have been found to contain vitamin c, niacin, potassium and diosgenin. Fenugreek helps to increase libido, lessen the effect of hot flashes, and mood fluctuations that are common symptoms of menopause and PMS. They can also help to treat arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, treat sore throat, and cure acid reflux. Fenugreek also helps treat reproductive disorders, and helps treat hormonal disorders. They can also help lower cholesterol,lowering blood sugar levels and may be an effective treatment for type 1 and 2 Diabetes.
Tofu: Tofu is made from soya beans, water, and a coagulant. It is high in protein and calcium and low in fat. Tofu is well known for its ability to absorb new flavours through spices and marinades.
Tempeh: Tempeh is made from cooked and slightly fermented soya beans that are formed into a patty. Tempeh is high in calcium and protein.
Jack fruit: Jack fruit is rich in energy, dietary fibre, minerals and vitamins. It is free from saturated fats and cholesterol, making it a healthy option. Jack fruit contain a small, but significant amount of vitamin A and flavonoid pigments, it is also a good source of antioxidants, vitamin C, and vitamin B. The flesh is also a good source of potassium, magnesium, manganese, and iron.
Corriander: Corriander can be beneficial in the treatment of skin inflammation, high cholesterol levels, mouth ulcers, anemia,i ndigestion, menstrual disorders, smallpox, conjunctivitis, skin disorders, blood sugar disorders whilst also benefiting eye care.
